My own university study began at the age of 15, when I was still in high school. After graduating from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA when I was only 19 years old, I decided I was tired of school. Instead, I joined the military where I served onboard an aircraft carrier in Southern California. The work proved to be horribly boring so after my military service, I promptly moved on.
I spent several years teaching in the public school system in California while completing my graduate studies…only to receive my Masters degree just as the 2008 global financial crisis took off! The job market was grim, so I moved to Beijing to teach and do research in my field. There, I taught AP English to students in the Dwight School dual diploma program at the high school attached to Capital Normal University. Our students received excellent test scores and were successfully admitted to top 50 universities in the United States.
Since then, many of my former students have gone on to pursue Masters and even PhD degrees at top universities such as MIT, Brown, and Duke. Inspired by my students' hard work, I went on to earn my own PhD in Social Science. Most recently, I have been taking a much-earned break to travel and write.
